Preparatory courses

Moscow State Institute of Music named after A.G. Schnittke and the affiliated Music College admit applicants to study the following:

- Piano;

- Orchestra string instruments (violin, viola, cello, double bass);

- Orchestra wind and percussion instruments (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion instruments);

- Orchestra folk instruments (accordion, button accordion (bayan), domra, domra – alto, balalaika, guitar, psaltery (gusli);

- Vocal art (academic and folk singing);

- Academic choir conducting;

- Folk choir conducting (institute only);

- Theory of music, musicology. 

Preparatory courses are a substructure of Schnittke Moscow State Institute of Music, the aim of which is to prepare would-be applicants to entering the College and Institute, and also to provide training for those willing to raise their educational, musical and cultural level.

Preparatory courses are held by experienced teachers of the College and the Institute.

Preparatory courses offer 1-year and 2-year programmes of day-time studies. The training at preparatory courses is paid.

Preparatory courses are held from 1 October to 30 June inclusively. Admission auditions (the major instrument and solfeggio) are held in September. The College and Institute may admit applicants during the year depending on the degree of their expertise. 

The classes at the preparatory courses are held individually. The number of hours for every discipline is determined by the level of the applicant’s expertise. 

Intermediate assessment is held at the end of December and March. Final assessment takes place at the end of June. The ten-grade scale is used for assessment. Getting an unsatisfactory mark the applicant is denied the possibility to continue studying at the preparatory courses.

The students of preparatory courses are admitted to the College or Institute without special preferences.

Classes in the Russian language and literature are held free of charge for the students of the preparatory department in February.
